Designer Role: Lead Creative Designer

Project Overview

In celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Birthday, the British High Commission sought to host a high-profile event spotlighting young Nigerians (ages 18–35) excelling in arts, technology, and business. The event was also a tribute to the vibrant UK-Nigeria cultural and innovation exchange, aimed at fostering “people-to-people” connections.

My role was to translate this dynamic vision into a bespoke programme booklet that would visually capture the spirit of creativity, elegance, and cross-cultural celebration, balancing sophistication for dignitaries with the edginess and vibrancy that speaks to Nigeria’s creative youth.

Creative Challenge

Dual audience: Appeal to both youthful innovators and older high-profile diplomats.

Cultural balance: Weave UK and Nigerian influences subtly but meaningfully.

Design depth: Create a visually compelling cover while adding elegant, meaningful design touches inside.

Design Concept: “Converge” Inspired by the event’s goal of showcasing the convergence of nations, generations, and creative disciplines, I designed the booklet around the theme: “Converge: Where Creativity Meets Culture.”

Design

Visual Style: Bold yet refined; fusing traditional Nigerian patterns with British minimalist aesthetics.

Palette: A regal mix of indigo, gold, and soft coral, symbolising royalty, creativity, and energy.

Typography: A blend of contemporary serif (for formality) and Afrofuturist-inspired display fonts for flair.

Interior Layout

Sections: Welcome Note, Programme Flow, Featured Creatives, Sponsor Acknowledgements, and Partner Spotlights.

Design Treatments: Subtle watermark motifs from Nigerian textile art across pages, pull quotes from young innovators, and embedded QR codes linking to live exhibits or digital artist portfolios.

Photography Integration: Space was created to showcase portraits and projects from young Nigerian innovators, creating a personal connection for attendees.

Collaborative Engagement

Worked closely with:

  • Local curators to source youth-led content and visuals.
  • Print vendors to ensure premium tactile quality (card stock + glossy paper).
  • Event producers to align design with venue mood, stage setup, and thematic zones (fashion, food, tech).

Impact

  • Guests and embassy officials described the booklet as “a beautiful balance of elegance and youth.”
  • It served as a programme guide but as a collector’s piece, taken home by many attendees.
  • Young Nigerian contributors felt represented and elevated, with several gaining post-event features and media interest from UK outlets.
